Two million workers plan to change jobs before Christmas

New research reveals that more than two million workers are planning to switch jobs before Christmas, with most workers motivated by a better work-life balance.

According to Totaljobs - which analysed more than 4.2 million job changes since 2015 and surveyed more than 4,500 jobseekers - a quarter of the UK workforce is planning on a change in the next two years.

The number of job-switchers varies by industry. Construction workers were most likely to pursue a change, with 49% serving their notice period or actively looking for a new role. A high proportion of administration (41%) and IT (31%) workers are also seeking a change.

When asked why they were looking to change jobs, a majority (57%) of jobseekers said that work-life balance was the primary reason. Many also cited a higher salary (52%) and the opportunity to learn new skills (38%) as key reasons.

Here, the impact of the pandemic is key. More than three-quarters of people (76%) reported that work-life balance is more important to them after the coronavirus pandemic.

Jon Wilson, CEO of Totaljobs, said: “Our research shows that for many people, the career ladder isn’t so linear anymore; career shifts and job changes are commonplace. With Covid-19 changing our day-to-day working lives, people are increasingly searching for work-life balance, flexibility or simply for a job they can get more satisfaction out of, and they’ll look to other industries to find it.”

Miles Grady, Director of Umbrella.co.uk said: “The coronavirus pandemic forced many of us to step back and reevaluate our priorities. This period of soul-searching has led many to the decision that they need to change their jobs.

“For many job-switchers, choosing to become a contractor or an umbrella employee can bring more flexibility and job satisfaction. It allows you to be your own boss, earn more money and, in many cases, bring more work-life balance.

“With record numbers of vacancies and shortages in some key industries, the timing couldn’t be better for many.”
