Companies call on Treasury to delay National Insurance rise Umbrella.co.uk

Business groups have called on the Chancellor Rishi Sunak to delay a planned increase to National Insurance amid rising prices and a slowdown in recruitment activity.

Make UK, which represents 20,000 manufacturing firms in the UK, called the £12bn tax boost ‘illogical and ill-timed’. They argued that April’s 1.25 percentage point increase to the tax on employees and employers should wait until the economy is on a firmer footing.

New Government Covid Support Scheme Announced

Yesterday, the Chancellor announced new financial measures to support UK businesses and workers.

Primarily it seeks to address the concerns of the hospitality sector and those areas now deemed to be in Tiers 2 and 3. These new measures are due to come into effect after the current scheme ends on the 1st November and will run for 6 months.

Workers may be paid up to 67% of their wages up to a maximum of £2,100 per month if a business has to close under the Tier rules.

End of Furlough Looms for Contractors

Many industries have been rocked by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As the smallest entity in supply chains, contractors will be among the hardest hit by the virus lockdown.

For many contractors, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) has been a valuable source of support when other work has dried up.

Because umbrella companies employ umbrella contractors on a PAYE system, contractors have had the opportunity to receive furlough payments since the scheme was announced.

Umbrella.co.uk Christmas Party and Staff Awards 2022

Umbrella.co.uk held its Christmas Party and annual awards on the 9th of December.  We chose a cold and snowy evening to make it very festive!  60-plus staff enjoyed a fabulous meal and drinks, followed by a period of ‘shape throwing’ on the dance floor by those who could – or at least thought they could after partaking in the bar!  The photo booth provides permanent evidence of the high jinks!

Government opens umbrella working consultation

Contractors and agencies are being encouraged to share their views in a new consultation on umbrella working.

Umbrella companies support the flexible labour market by providing employment services for temporary workers.

IR35 Contractors: Watch Out For Unlawful Umbrellas

New IR35 rules due to take effect in the private sector from April 2021 could force thousands of limited company contractors to shutter their limited company and start using an umbrella company for the first time.

Joining an umbrella company is a tax efficient way to ensure IR35 compliance while also enjoying some for the benefits that come along with being an employee, such as holiday and sick pay.

Unfortunately some non-PAYE payment vehicles also describe themselves as ‘umbrellas’ and these schemes are often illegitimate.
