HMRC have published a further 70 employers that were found to be in breach of the National Minimum Wage Regulations.

Good news for married couples and qualifying Civil Partnerships is that from 6th April 2015 they may be able to claim additional tax relief in respect of their partners unused tax allowance.

The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) have published their response to the HMRC Employment Intermediaries: Temporary workers – relief for travel and subsistence expenses.

In the past the LITRG have reviewed Umbrella Company Schemes and in particular how alternative models such as the Payday by Payday Scheme (PDBPD) affect Low Income Workers. It is from this respect they have responded to the HMRC potential threat of restricting relief on travel and subsistence expenses. They are in particular concerned that any scheme that is deemed non-compliant could see the low income worker being chased for taxes owing.

On reading recent news articles about umbrella company workers it seems clear there is a misconception about how they work. Especially in relation to the employers national insurance (E’ers NIC) and the umbrella company margin.

Choosing a company name for your new business can often be a complex decision with you having to avoid similarly named businesses and exclude banned words such as implying you are a Government Body or a member of an industry/trade body (i.e. the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) control the use of the term Chartered Accountant).

Ed Balls has received controversy for saying we should always get a receipt when paying cash-in-hand for a job, however small. He is quoted as saying he always gets a receipt even when paying £10 for having his hedge cut.

Whilst it would be great for all of us if everyone paid their fair share of tax, it is not that simple and unfortunately it is often the case that people are happy to pay cash if it means they can get a job done cheaper.

At the time of year if you receive an email from HMRC you may panic that you owe tax or if it says you are owed a refund then you may be keen to respond in order to receive it. At the end of the day you don’t want to ignore a valid email for fear of being fined or missing out on a tax refund you may be due.
