HMRC has published the cost of administering IR35 and an estimate of the tax they think they’d lose if it was abolished. This despite the cost of administering IR35 greatly outweighing the cash collected from IR35 investigations.

The report estimates the cost of administering IR35 to be £16m and the tax that would be lost if it was abolished to be £550m.

The umbrella sector is, in many ways, something of an unsung hero for the UK economy. Some potentially good news for contractors who operate through their own limited company is that HMRC have relaxed their deadline for Limited Companies (with less than 50 employees) that are adjudged to be late filing their monthly PAYE returns and hence liable for a penalty.

At the time of year if you receive an email from HMRC you may panic that you owe tax or if it says you are owed a refund then you may be keen to respond in order to receive it. At the end of the day you don’t want to ignore a valid email for fear of being fined or missing out on a tax refund you may be due.

HMRC have a series of webinars coming up for the benefit of contractors and subcontractors that use or want to use the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

A webinar is an hour long presentation that also allows those watching to participate in a questions and answers session.

HMRC have produced a list of Professional membership fees and subscriptions for which tax relief is available. Tax relief is available provided that:

  • The organization you pay appears on the HMRC list;
  • You pay the cost rather than your employer;
  • The fee is not for a lifetime membership; and
  • You require membership to do your job or it is helpful to have.

HMRC have published a further 70 employers that were found to be in breach of the National Minimum Wage Regulations.

Professional Passport have submitted their response to the HMRC discussion document – “Employment Intermediaries: Temporary workers - Relief for travel and subsistence”.

Following responses to the HMRC consultation on the Reporting Requirements for Employment Intermediaries it has issued the findings and in response to these some amendments to the reporting requirements.
