Today, 18th March 2015, is the final budget before the General Election. At Umbrella.co.uk we will be reporting all the changes that will affect contractors, freelancers and umbrella companies.

Because this is the last budget pre-election many hope that it will be an opportunity for good news as the Tories will be keen to gain support.

After the Festive Break and the beginning of a new calendar year we thought it would be good to do a round-up of current tax issues and news.

Today, 3rd December 2014, the Chancellor George Osborne delivered his Autumn Statement (#AS2014).

A recent survey by PeopleperHour, an online business that helps match freelancers to very short term jobs or tasks, claims to have found that 58% of new freelance positions were being won by women.

Today, 10th March 2015, representatives of the Umbrella Company industry and of Employment Intermediaries will be meeting a number of MP’s at the House of Commons to discuss the HMRC review of Tax Relief on Expenses.

Finally the UK’s growing army of freelancers and contractors will have a presence at the heart of Government. At least, that is the vision behind the role of MP David Morris. The Conservative MP for Morecambe and Lunsdale has job of ‘tsar’, or ‘ambassador’, to the UK Government on behalf of some 4.5million independent UK workers.

The Government chose The National Freelancers Day to announce the appointment of David Morris MP as their Self-Employed Ambassador.

National Freelancer Day

National Freelancers Day (NFD 2014) is approaching and this year is happening on Wednesday, 19th November 2014.
