The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) has welcomed news of deflation in the UK economy.

Last week, the consumer price index figures for September showed that prices had dropped by 0.1%. This news was welcomed by IPSE which said that lower prices and rising incomes were making freelancers and other self-employed people better off.

While deflation is treated cautiously by some economists and politicians, lower consumer prices and, in particular, lower transport costs will directly benefit contractors.

Self-employed contractors and umbrella PAYE employees had lots of reasons to cheer at this year’s party conferences.  We’ve highlighted some of the most important points that could affect our clients.

As the party in government, what came out of the Conservative camp in Manchester will have the most immediate impact for our contractors.

David Cameron announced a relaxation of planning rules in an attempt to boost home ownership. Under the plans, builders would no longer be required to offer low-cost ‘affordable’ homes as part of new developments. More building work is always welcomed by construction contractors whether they are self-employed or PAYE.

The UK has long been different in some respects. Take property, for example. While swathes of continental Europeans and indeed Americans have for decades happily rented their properties, our homes very much remain our castles. It’s a similar story when it comes to cars, with over a quarter of motorists in the States leasing their vehicles.

“The UK is now fast cottoning on to why car leasing is often the financially savvy option, though”, comments Lee Wolstenholme, Director of Manchester-based Vehicle Consulting, a broker with over 12 years’ experience. “Cars depreciate the minute they are driven off forecourts, so taking out a traditional loan to buy a new vehicle typically leaves motorists with a car or van that has lost value considerably after a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, means you can simply hand the keys back at the end of the contract and the vehicle’s value isn’t yours to worry about”, Lee goes on to explain.

Contractors can save an average of £1,000 per year on their shopping bills and benefit from hundreds of pounds worth of other rewards as part of the new Umbrella Max and Accounts Max schemes, provided by Wilmslow-based contractor financial services specialist Umbrella.co.uk.

Pay growth for IT contractors is outstripping increases in permanent salaries, a specialist technology recruitment firm has found.

Computer People’s latest IT Monitor report reveals that contractor rates increased by 3.9% between June 2014 and June 2015. That’s compared to average year-on-year salary growth in the permanent market of 3.01%.

New research has found that proposed changes to contractors' travel and subsistence allowances could cost them up to 20 per cent of their annual revenue.

In July of last year the government launched a review into expenses and benefits for contractors. On 23 September 2014 they published a discussion paper outlining their case for changing the current rules on tax relief.

The government believes that travel and subsistence expenses, like travel between workplaces and the cost of a meal at a temporary workplace, are over generous and outdated.

Earlier this week Chancellor George Osborne announced that the first purely Conservative Autumn Statement will take place on November 25th 2015.

The Autumn Statement has, in accountancy circles, grown to become a sort of ‘mini-Budget’. However, a lot of the announcements we’re expecting in this November’s statement are continuations and extensions of changes put forward as part of the Summer Budget.

With a little over two months to go until the next budget announcement we’ve put together a preview, analysing how some predicted changes could affect contractors in the UK.
