Why Introduced:

So HMRC can tackle Employment Intermediaries that use false self-employment and offshore locations to reduce taxes and avoid employment rights.

HMRC want to know amounts paid to workers supplied by the Employment Intermediary where PAYE has not been deducted.

It has been reported that following a successful campaign from UCATT, albeit completely inaccurate, Edwina Hart the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport has now announced that the Government in Wales will amend contracts to ensure Umbrella Companies cannot be used for new Construction Contracts.

UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians) have come in for criticism for their blanket policy of targeting umbrella companies and not understanding that it is actually the change in legislation that means many construction workers can no longer be treated as self-employed or paid through the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

Umbrella.co.uk have reviewed the 2014 Budget Statement for any key issues affecting UK contractors.

HMRC have a series of webinars coming up for the benefit of contractors and subcontractors that use or want to use the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

A webinar is an hour long presentation that also allows those watching to participate in a questions and answers session.

On Channel 4 Dispatches 19th January 2015 reporter Morland Sanders looked at lower paid workers in the UK. The episode was titled “Low Pay Britain”. It is available on catch-up for the next month.
